SEAL in K-3 Classrooms!

One of the many things that makes Santee unique is SEAL. SEAL is a model designed to teach English Language Learners, who represent the majority of Santee's student population.

SEAL immerses all students in a language-rich environment where they are taught through thematic units that have been created by teachers across the district based on the current History-Social Science Content Standards for California and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Students in grades kindergarten through third grade learn important content through roughly 6 - 7 thematic units each academic year. Examples of themes include "Forces in Motion" in kindergarten, "Light & Sound" in first grade, and "Immigration, Now & Then," in second grade.

Teachers across the primary grades are overjoyed that SEAL was adopted at our school. Third grade teacher Kelly Maeda, commented, "SEAL is a wonderful model to teach our ELLs. It makes our students' learning more cohesive and provides ample opportunities for our ELLs to engage with the English language in ways that are meaningful and inviting."
